Are You Ready To Be Happy?

The way you live your life has subtle but profound implications.

One can easily can go about their days seeking enjoyment and pleasure, ignoring their physical, emotional, and mental health, and wondering why they feel that something’s “missing” in their life. I can’t provide a chart of statistics to prove this, but I know there are many people who live this way. There’s a nagging feeling in the back of their minds that something isn’t quite right. Happiness, when it comes, seems fleeting, almost not real. Sadness is always there, lurking, waiting to settle over each day like a thick fog. Someone might notice and ask, “Hey, you seem down. What’s wrong?” There’s no answer besides some variation of: “I’m not sure… I guess I’m just out of sorts?”

The truth is that the problem lies in the foundation that underpins many of our lives. It’s a problem rooted in how we live, our so-called “lifestyle.” The solution to this problem is not simple. The good news is that there is a solution, and it’s attainable for anyone willing to put in the work to make it happen.

I have learned that the lifestyle that brings me joy is a yogic lifestyle. Living a yogic lifestyle means:

  • Taking a holistic approach toward health and wellness.
  • Getting up early to meditate and reflect.
  • Putting love before anger and reducing violence from thought, word, and deed.
  • Breathing deeply the energy that surrounds us, and eliminating the negativity (since we don’t want to breathe that in!)

Living a yogic life is all of these things and more, and as you might know: it’s also not easy. To change our lifestyle means to change who we are. Imagine how difficult it would be to change the foundation of the Empire State building, to make preparations for new development. It’s not only difficult, it’s seemingly impossible! Now understand this: you are even bigger than the Empire State building. Changing your foundation is no easy feat: to accomplish this transformation requires tearing down your self and rebuilding from the ground up.

A Swami once told me, “If you put a note on the mirror that you look at every morning that says ‘Tomorrow I will be the person I know I can be’, you’ll see that every morning and always defer taking action until tomorrow.” Even if we’re blessed with a tomorrow (we all must learn to understand this is not guaranteed!), and if we put our trust in tomorrow, we may fail to take action now, today.

The only way to change your lifestyle is through putting in work right now, in the present. I believe that each moment is a gift, which is why we call it “the present.” Each moment we have an opportunity to take a step toward our goal of being the person we know we can become. Every instance of “now” is our only true chance to make a choice to be that person whom we know is there inside of us, but who can’t seem to find a way out.

As difficult as it is to make these fundamental changes in our lives, it’s important to know that there’s no reason to despair. There’s help available from many sources. For some, reading a book or watching an inspiring film is enough to help us find our feet on the path. Some of us though, need more: we need a partner to work with us and coach us through the changes.
